The Friend of World Languages Award recognizes an individual or group outside the world language education profession who has contributed significantly to the teaching, learning, and/or promotion of world languages in Michigan. Kristin Willey is a passionate and dedicated educational leader with over 17 years of experience in secondary education. She currently serves as an assistant principal at Mt. Pleasant High School, a position she has held for the past three years. In this role, Kristin continues to champion academic excellence, equity, and global learning opportunities for all students.
A strong advocate for world language education, Kristin understands the importance of preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world. She has played an instrumental role in expanding language offerings at Mt. Pleasant High School, including supporting the addition of American Sign Language as a new course option. Kristin has also worked closely with Spanish educators to secure curriculum materials that meet their needs, notably advocating for the adoption of Somos after listening to teacher feedback and researching best practices in language instruction.
Kristin earned both her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and her Master of Arts in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. Her classroom teaching experience includes English Language Arts, publications, and ELA support for grades 7–12. She has also served as a department head, student media advisor, and varsity cheer coach. Her leadership extends to curriculum development at both the district and regional levels.
She has been a consistent and respected leader on the Professional Study Committee, her district’s curriculum committee, helping to guide curriculum review and instructional alignment across departments. Kristin also serves on the Building Emergency Response Team, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and the ELA Task Force. She has led professional development, mentored educators, and secured multiple grants to support student learning.
Kristin is known for her ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Her commitment to collaboration, student voice, and innovative programming has strengthened the school community. She has been recognized with the CFX Golden Apple Educator Award and the District 2 Coach of the Year Award for her outstanding contributions.
Kristin is deeply honored to receive the 2025 MIWLA Friend of World Languages Award and remains committed to supporting equitable, student-centered language education across Michigan.
