Each year, the MIWLA Executive Board nominates candidates for the Barbara Ort-Smith Award. This is the most prestigious award a professional in the field of world languages can receive in the state of Michigan. The award honors those who have shown a strong commitment to the profession, manifesting itself in leadership and the promotion of excellence in world language education. The first recipient of this award was Barbara Ort-Smith in 1988. She served as the first Foreign Language consultant in the state of Michigan.
Erica Peplinski-Burge is a neuroscience-loving language educator with a passion for helping students and teachers thrive. Over her 18 years in the classroom, she taught Spanish to learners from preschool through 8th grade and helped co-create and lead a full K–12 Spanish program in her district. She developed and implemented Comprehensible Input strategies across grade levels and supported curriculum design and professional development for world language teachers. She’s especially known for making language instruction joyful, effective, and brain-friendly.
Originally from Flint, Michigan, Erica is a lifelong learner and adventurer, she even spent a summer living in Mexico to soak up the language and culture firsthand. In 2020, she was honored as the Michigan World Language Association (MIWLA) Teacher of the Year, and she continues to work with teachers across the country through her engaging presentations.
She’s a regular presenter at national and regional conferences like ACTFL, Central States, MIWLA, iFLT, Express Fluency, and Comprehensible Online. Erica also plays a key role in organizing MittenCI, a community-driven CI conferences that bring teachers together to learn and grow.
Erica currently serves as Curriculum Manager and Professional Development Specialist at Voces Digital, where she leads the design of the wold language curriculum and facilitates meaningful training for world language teachers. She’s also a published author, having coauthored a chapter on language acquisition with Contee Seely and written a Spanish reader about monarch butterflies.
Whether she’s writing curriculum, mentoring teachers, or presenting at conferences, Erica loves supporting educators with her trademark energy and expertise.
